Álvaro Siza Vieira

  • Álvaro Joaquim de Melo Siza Vieira was born in Matosinhos in 1933.
  • Studied Architecture at the Oporto School of Fine Arts between 1949 and 1955, performing his first project in 1954.
  • He taught at the Oporto School of Fine Arts between 1966 and 1969; returning in 1976 as Assistant Professor of the Construction course.
  • Visiting Professor at Lausanne Polytechnic School, Pennsylvania University, Los Andes School in Bogotá, and “Kenzo Tange Visiting Professor” at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design; and Professor at the Oporto School of Architecture.
  • He currently works as an architect in the city of Oporto.
  • He has received a number of Awards, designedly: in 1988, Alvar Aalto Foundation Gold Medal, the Harvard University Prince of Wales Award and the European Architecture Award from the European Community Comission / Mies Van der Rohe Fundation. In 1992 he received the Pritzker Architecture Prize from the Hyatt Foundation in Chicago for his work. In 1998, won the Praemium Imperiale from the Japanese Art Association of Tokyo. In 2001, received the Prize from the Wolf Foundation in Israel. In 2002, he received the Gold Lion Award (best project) from the Venice Biennal and the Vitruvio 2002 Award from the National Fine Arts Museum of Buenos Aires.
  • He is member of the American Institute of Fine Arts and Science and is an “Honorary Fellow” of the Royal Institute of British Architects.
  • He has been conferred the title of Doctor “Honoris Causa” from: Valencia Polytechnic University, Federal Polytechnic of Lausanne, Palermo University, Menendez Pelayo University, National Engineering University of Lima, the University of Coimbra and Lusíada University.
